Nitrate poisoning hits Waikato herds

DairyNZ says it is hearing of several cases of nitrate poisoning in the Waikato region, with several cow deaths.

Nitrate poisoning is caused by high nitrate levels in feed and usually occurs in late autumn or winter, particularly during a flush of growth after a dry period.

In an email to Waikato farmers, DairyNZ regional leader Waikato Wilma Foster outlined key factors to reduce of nitrate poisoning in herds.

Booming sheep milking a top prospect

Good growth in the sheep milking industry during the 2018-19 financial year signals this is a good time for farmers to get involved, says Spring Sheep Milk Co, who will be at Fieldays this week.

The firm’s producer business manager, Thomas Macdonald, says international demand for New Zealand sheep milk products is strong. And more farmers are inquiring about converting their dairy farms to sheep milk, he says.

“Heading into our fifth dairy season we are noticing a lot more interest in the industry,” says Macdonald. “Last year, I might have received around one inquiry a month from a farmer looking at options, but those inquiries are now coming in thick and fast.”

Waikato farmers scoop sustainability awards

Waikato farmers Adrian and Pauline Ball are the new National Ambassadors for Sustainable Farming and Growing, plus the recipients of the Gordon Stephenson Trophy.

The owners and operators of Dennley Farms Ltd scooped the top award at the Ballance Farm Environment Awards National Sustainability Showcase at Claudelands in Hamilton last night.

The Ballance Farm Environment Awards celebrate and promote sustainable farming and growing practices.

Dennley Farms’ strong environmental, social and economic sustainability was a stand-out for the National Judging Panel. The business’ tagline is ‘creating value inside the farm gate,’ and the farm team is active in the creation of meaningful industry change and driven to improve consumer perception of the sector.
